In the heart of Saudi Arabia’s ambitious tourism and development project, the Red Sea International Airport, a remarkable feat of engineering and precision was accomplished on a clear morning in early 11th of February 2025. The task at hand was the installation of pergola blades, essential components designed to enhance the airport’s aesthetic appeal whilst providing shade and comfort to its future passengers.
The operation involved lifting and positioning these large, custom-designed pergola blades, each weighing over 10 metric tons, to precise locations atop the airport’s terminal structure. The blades, crafted from high-quality aluminium steel with a sleek, modern finish, were not just functional but also a statement of architectural beauty, meant to mimic the flow of the Red Sea’s waves under the desert sun.
Preparation and Planning:
Months of meticulous planning preceded the lift. A team of seasoned engineers from Red Sea Global, Reem Aluminium, Smart Skill and Lloyds British International collaborated to ensure every aspect of the operation was failproof. We conducted extensive site surveys, performed load calculations, and simulated the lift in various weather conditions to guarantee safety and precision.
Execution:
A total of 124 pergola blades were hoisted with the utmost care into 4 separate terminal gardens each housing 31 pergola blades, the crane’s operator communicating constantly with the ground team. The blades were lifted, maneuverer through the air, and then gently lowered into place. The operation was not just about brute force but also about finesse, with every movement calculated to avoid any damage to the delicate architecture below.
